Localization

Localization is the process of adapting a product or content to a specific locale or market. Translation is only one of several elements of the localization process. In addition to translation, the localization process may also include:

  • Adapting graphics to target markets
  • Modifying content to suit the tastes and consumption habits of other markets
  • Adapting design and layout to properly display translated text
  • Converting to local requirements (such as currencies and units of measure)
  • Using proper local formats for dates, addresses, and phone numbers
  • Addressing local regulations and legal requirements

Localization aims to give a product the look and feel of having been created specifically for a target market, no matter their language, culture, or location (in this case Mexico).

  • Checking the quality and completeness of a translation
  • Organize and connect sections
  • Eliminate tangential information
  • Ensuring terminological accuracy and consistency

Revising (Bilingual editing)

Proofreading

  • Rewriting awkward or unclear sentences
  • Correcting punctuation, grammatical, and mechanical errors
  • Correcting spelling mistakes
  • Formatting citations, cover sheets, footnotes, and references correctly

  • Clarity of title
  • Overly repeated or misused words
  • Sentence structure and syntax
  • Rhythm and flow (sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph)
  • Accuracy of cited references
  • Length of the document (i.e., number of pages or words)

Transcription

Transcription is the exact written reproduction of spoken language (in this case, in Spanish, English or German).

This is especially useful when adding subtitles to a video (the voice is converted into text so that a translator can translate the text into another language), when it is necessary to submit the content of the video recording in writing (for a judicial process) or, for example, to write a report based on the recording of a specialist (doctors, etc.).

Subtitling consists of inserting texts (often the translation of the speech) onto cinema or television pictures, usually on the lower part of the screen, to accompany dialogues or commentaries. In journalism and advertising, subtitles or captions are used to identify or describe situations or products, allowing the recipient to contextualize and understand the information or message aimed at him. In cinema, following subtitles and listening to actors’ or narrators’ speech can be a good aid for learning the language or watching foreign media.
